Songs Rise Beneath the Drum Towers, as Spring Fills the Dong Village

image.png

When spring arrives in Guizhou, the mountains come alive with color and the waters begin to sing. Songs beneath the drum towers, curling smoke between stilted houses, and shifting light within stone dwellings together weave a living tapestry of springtime mountain life. Following the path of blooming flowers, we step into these hillside homes, listening to echoes of time, feeling the pulse of present-day life, and witnessing how the ancient and the new meet in spring.

Spring is in full bloom. Nestled among rolling mountains, Zhaoxing Dong Village blends seamlessly with blue skies and green waters. Five drum towers, scattered across the village, stand quietly as guardians of this thousand-year-old community.

The drum tower is the most striking presence in a Dong village, and also its warmest space.

Built without a single nail, joined entirely through intricate wooden joints, the structure has stood firm for centuries. Supported by four main pillars symbolizing the seasons and twelve side pillars representing the months, the drum tower rise tier upon tier like pagodas. Its eaves are adorned with vividly carved birds and animals, while panels unfold scenes of everyday life, recording the rhythms of the village and carrying memories passed down through generations.

As the saying goes, the drum tower comes before the village. More than architecture, it is the“heart” of the community. At the top hangs a ceremonial drum; below, a fire pit and circular benches bring people together. From community meetings to weddings, from welcoming guests to celebrating festivals, all important moments take place here. By day, elders gather and chat while children play nearby. By night, firelight flickers as people sit together, singing in antiphonal voices, laughter echoing through the space. Every gathering and every connection unfolds beneath this great“wooden umbrella,” making the drum tower the shared living room of the Dong people.

For the Dong people, the drum tower as a communal space embodies both emotional belonging and social order. Traditionally valuing trust and a strong sense of agreement, the Dong community saw its customs blend with Confucian ideals of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and integrity during the Qing Dynasty. As a result, the five drum towers of Zhaoxing Dong Village were named after these virtues. They are not only architectural landmarks, but also enduring symbols of a shared system of values.

In the past, drum towers served as beacon points for transmitting urgent messages. Today, they have become windows connecting the village with the wider world.

In recent years, musicians from across the globe have come to Zhaoxing Dong Village, singing together with local villagers beneath the drum towers, their voices blending under the same night sky. First come the songs, then come the bonds. As melodies echo through the wooden beams, these sincere encounters across mountains and seas linger in memory long after the sound fades.
