Spring Unfolds in Stilted Houses Among Mountains and Waters

When spring arrives in Guizhou, the mountains come alive with color and the waters begin to sing. Songs beneath the drum towers, curling smoke between stilted houses, and shifting light within stone dwellings together weave a living tapestry of springtime mountain life. Following the path of blooming flowers, we step into these hillside homes, listening to echoes of time, feeling the pulse of present-day life, and witnessing how the ancient and the new meet in spring.

A spring breeze sweeps across Leigong Mountain, where peaks rise in layered shades of green. Tucked within this lush landscape lies Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village. From above, rows of stilted houses cascade down the slopes, spreading with the contours of the land like wooden rings grown from the earth itself.

These stilted houses embody the Miao people’s ingenuity in living with the mountains and waters. Faced with slopes ranging from 30 to 70 degrees, they use wooden stilts of varying lengths to elevate their homes into semi-suspended structures—an elegant solution that both adapts to uneven terrain and ensures ventilation and protection from moisture.

A typical stilted house has three levels: the ground floor is used for cooking, storing tools, and keeping livestock; the top attic stores grain; and the middle floor serves as the heart of daily life, with a main hall for receiving guests and bedrooms for rest. The corridor outside the hall, where Miao women often sit to embroider, is known as the Beauty’s Balcony, and has become a favorite spot for visitors to capture photos.

In spring, the houses come alive with fresh greenery and blooming flowers. Colorful textiles hang from wooden railings, bright against the surrounding hills. As night falls, lights begin to glow, and the village transforms into a river of stars across the valley. In the distance, songs drift through the air, echoing along corridors and under eaves. Amid it all, one can’t help but slow down and unwind.

Here in Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village, the stilted houses carry a deep harmony between people and nature, preserving a warmth that has endured for generations. To step into this place is to enter a moment gently held by time—where the mountain breeze and the scent of wood invite a quiet, enduring sense of peace and poetry.
